Brilliant Technology
With the world’s first widescreen 12.1" indoor/outdoor transreflective LED backlight display, the Portégé® R600 notebook is ideal for usage in virtually any lighting condition. Indoors, the LED backlit display produces consistently rich color saturation and superb image quality. Outdoors, a push of a button turns off the LED backlights so you can conserve battery life while the transreflective screen ingeniously uses natural light to bring colors and images to life.

The Portégé® R600’s display was designed to be viewed in many environments. For indoor viewing, the LED backlight provides crisp, clear, vivid images and well-defined text. While outdoors, the transreflective display of the Portégé® R600 allows ambient light or direct sunlight to pass through the display and reflect outward so that the screen is fully functional — even in the sunniest of days. This is in contrast to conventional displays, which are comprised of illuminated liquid crystals, ideal for indoor usage, but whose light may easily be washed out by the sun. For superior outdoor viewability, Toshiba uses only the highest-quality transreflective displays.

Toshiba designed the Portégé® R600 series for outstanding battery performance. While the battery itself is exceptional, the components it supports work together as one energy-efficient system. The Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, the LED backlit display and the ultra-compact motherboard were each built to consume minimal battery power. Even the most minute details — such as the component dimensions, layout and airflow direction — were designed to support optimal battery life. LED backlit displays consume as little as ½ the power as standard LCD displays, resulting in enhanced battery life.

Innovative dome design
An innovative dome design over the hard disk drive protects it from direct chassis impact,* while protective ribs under the palm rest cover the optical drive increase the drive's durability. These design elements are three times more secure than conventional HDD and ODD casings. And to take durability to the next level, a flat LCD cover protects the lid surface from direct pressure/impact.

Shock absorbing design
Strategically placed vibration dampening materials better protect critical internal components such as the hard disk drive and LCD. To further protect the LCD in the event of an accidental drop, Toshiba used 'base-first impact design' to extend the base of the chassis wider than the LCD so that the base - not the LCD - absorbs shock.

LCD Mask and Touchpad
A 0.6mm thin mask helps protect the LCD from external smears and blemishes. Its special composition adds to the ultraportability of the Portégé® R600: It's 10% lighter than the masks of traditional display.

3D Accelerometer
The 3D accelerometer detects acceleration in any direction. It helps guard the HDD against awkward accidental drops*, including a spinning, falling notebook, by rapidly removing the HDD head from between the HDD platters, better protecting the notebook in all three rotational dimensions.

Solid Keyboard
To better ensure reliable performance over the life of the product, Toshiba subjected the Portégé® R600 keyboard to exhaustive durability testing.* And to better bolster the reliability, the Portégé® R600 designed the keyboard to be spill-resistant. Underneath the keyboard is the spill-resistant sub-structure that has been designed to better contain accidental spills so that the user has time to save current information, close out the active applications and properly turn the Portégé® R600 off.

Improved fingerprint reader
A secure fingerprint reader helps ensure authorized use of the laptop. By reading the ridge and valley patterns of the live cells beneath the skin's surface, the Portégé® R600's fingerprint reader is more accurate in recognizing users because its registered fingerprint template automatically updates the encrypted fingerprint image, building out larger areas of the finger as the number of scans increases. For enhanced system security and access, users can associate system passwords for the BIOS, HDD & OS with their fingerprint, while the multiple passwords help thwart the unauthorized user.

Bluetooth® authentication
Use your Bluetooth® wireless technology-enabled cell phone to connect and log on to your Portégé® R600. Logging on this way can replace manual password entry or add a layer of security by supplementing the manual password logon. This method of logon provides another layer of security: If you walk away from your laptop with the cell phone, the screen locks to prevent unauthorized use. When you come back in range of the laptop with your phone, the laptop unlocks.

TPM
The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is an embedded security chipset and software application that provides high-level protection for encryption keys, passwords and user credentials. This technology makes the Portégé® R600 more secure than systems based on standard, software-only encryption authentication solutions.
